NFS Mounts on Leopard / MAC OS

mac-linux-nfsNFS mounts are now added using Disk Utility. To add a Linux-hosted NFS share do the following:
  1. Start Disk Utility
  2. Select NFS Mounts from the File menu
  3. Click the plus sign in the lower left corner
  4. Enter in your remote NFS URL info as described
  5. Enter the mount point. If you add it to /Network, then it will show up in the Shared section of Finder, in an entry called All.
  6. If you’re using secure ports on your server, then click the Advanced option and enter -P
  7. Click Verify
  8. Save your settings

for those of you asking about iscsi -

ZFS wasn’t the only AWOL storage technology in Apple’s OS X 10.5 – early builds of Leopard included a built-in iSCSI initiator. When the operating system was finally released in October of 2007, both ZFS and iSCSI were quietly dropped.  Both Microsoft and Linux offer native iSCSI client implementations and Apple is lagging behind here.

In the mean time, those seeking iSCSI connectivity within Mac OS X do have third-party options to consider:

  • Studio Network Solutions offers a free  iSCSI initiator for OS X Tiger and Leopard. The globalSAN iSCSI Initiator is the client-side portion of their SANmp storage sharing solution, and purports to support most of the required protocols. In practice, however, the company cannot support other targets than their own.

split screen in Mac Terminal

terminalsplitwidget

If you haven’t noticed it by yet, there’s a new widget  on the Terminal app’s scrollbar.   This little widget allows you to split the window (even more than once) and drag the divider where you would like it to sit.

The area above the divider line is the scroll buffer; the area below the line is the area showing your active session.

Now – you can easily look back to your previous commands, output streams, look @ a man page while doing a tast – etc…

Important note however – the scroll bar will work on the scroll buffer but not on the active session. This makes it very easy to look back for previous commands, output streams, man pages, etc.

FireFox = #FAIL

FireFox Sucks

at least today it does 9/15/09

Not that long ago Firefox was the best thing on the earth. Remember laughing at your fuddy-duddy coworkers or friends still using internet explorer or safari?

Looks like the joke is on us.

My system has basically started working at a snails pace anytime I have FireFox (or as Bill TB calls it Fox Fire ) open.    Today alone it has crashed 8 times – and its only 10:45 AM.

What I have learned is this

  • Firefox cannot handle AJAX based web sites well – load a page with google analytics and voila – crash
  • The tabs – the more you have open the worse things will be – my limit is just 4- anything more than this and the resources on my Mac go to crud

Its time for me I fear – just like Bill TB – to Fire the Fox !

Best Buy + Microsoft = Linux Poo

image copyright -BestBuy

I walked into Best Buy and noticed they literally have NO Linux notebooks available (unless you count the Mac Systems … which are kinda like linux…) anyhow – I asked a few representatives about Linux – and each basically told me the same thing.

  • “Linux Sucks”
  • “No one uses Linux any more – its not secure…”
  • “Are you serious – you should not pay attention to those people who say linux is safer than windows – don’t believe the hype its all the marketing dollars from folks who are jealous against Microsoft”
  • “Linux won’t work with that iPhone you have in your hand… your best option is Windows 7 It will work better than even the mac stuff over there…   They don’t let me sell that stuff – in fact no one here can – except 1 guy… that’s because he is the newest on the toten poll.”
  • Linux is the cause of most every virus infection in the world – did you know that all of our Windows machines come with anti-virus – try getting that with a linux machine…

I asked repeatedly about Linux machines – and i was steered towards Windows every time.  Amazingly – I could not find 1 linux machine in any of their stores…

I wonder if there is something more sinister with all their Anti-Linux Marketing – but the Anti-Mac marketing was horrible – especially when they have the Mac’s sitting in the store !

This reminds me about Clif Guy’s Best rather Worst Buy Experience.

Mac Apps that are a Must Have

A Recent MAC convert (ok so has this church speek gone just to far? ? ? )I had to hunt to find those little apps that have helped me become more productive.

I hope these all help you as well:

  1. ANXIETY:  www.anxietyapp.com  In short – this clever little task manager allows your to-do list to stay in front of you all the time.   It plus into the iCal and Mail databases and allows a small translucent window remind you of what your tasks are.  A must for any ADHD Mac User (is there any other kind?)
  2. DESKTOP CURTAIN:  www.manytricks.com/desktopcurtain  If you have ever needed to take a screen snapshot – here is the tool to do just that.
  3. CYBERDUCK:  www.cyberduck.ch    While browser-based uploaders have their place – when it comes time for heavy-duty ftp and sftp – you really need an application.   that is where this little free application comes in.
  4. ADIUM-X:  www.adiumx.com   If you chat – and use multiple clients – STOP already and get this one… I only wish it had Skype support.  If your addicted to Voice or Video Chat then Adium is not for you – its text only… the way things used to be (only a short few years ago.

I will post more later – but these should get you started…
