vmware taking a strangling hold on virtualization
Virtualization is becoming more than just main stream – so much so – that by the end of 2009 it is believed that 50% of all new servers will be virtual. – That of course is up from 30% in 2008. (see TheInfoPro for details…)
Interestingly enough – VMWare
is boasting that during the 1st quarter of 2009- over 1/2 of the licensed x86 hypervisors we arell vmware. Add those numbers to the already existing number of vmware servers on the market – and one can only agree – VMWare is a success.
What i find misleading here is – with the many open source alternatives on the market – such as KVM, Xen and even OpenVZ – licensing is not required. – so … VMWare appears to be on top.
VMWare is expensive for many start-ups and small companies – however if they keep doing more than just simply rolling out new products and continue to build never-before-seen options for clients – they may even win over some of the pocketbooks from the folks who are swimming in the opensource puddles awaiting their funding to play like the big boys
